OpenBiome is a nonprofit health research organization and the largest distributor of fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) products in the United States, accelerating research on the human microbiome and ensuring access to novel microbiome therapeutics. Founded in 2012 and backed by Y Combinator (W20), the Massachusetts-based organization helped thousands of patients overcome Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) through investigational FMT therapy for over a decade. Due to FDA regulatory changes ending enforcement discretion, OpenBiome suspended FMT distribution as of December 31, 2024, after submitting an IND phase 2 protocol application in November 2024.
