Company Overview
KUKA AG is a leading German manufacturer of industrial robots and factory automation systems, headquartered in Augsburg, Germany. The company has a history spanning over 125 years, having evolved from a welding equipment manufacturer to one of the world's top industrial robot producers.
KUKA is an acronym for Keller und Knappich Augsburg, named after its founders Johann Josef Keller and Jakob Knappich who established the company in 1898. The company pioneered industrial robotics in Europe, creating its first industrial robot, FAMULUS, in 1973, and began mass production of industrial robots in 1978.
In 2016, KUKA was acquired by Chinese appliance manufacturer Midea Group, which completed a 94.55% stake acquisition in January 2017 and purchased the remaining shares in November 2022. Today, KUKA operates as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Midea, serving customers globally in automotive, electronics, consumer goods, and other manufacturing sectors.
KUKA reported sales revenues of 3.7 billion euros in 2024, down 7.9% from the record 4.1 billion euros achieved in 2023. The company posted a loss of 43.5 million euros as it faced increased competition and economic headwinds, leading to leadership changes and a strategic shift toward easier automation solutions and digital services.
