IBM OpenPages

IBM OpenPages is a scalable, AI-powered governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) platform that helps organizations manage risk, compliance, and audit functions in one integrated solution. Available on any cloud or on-premises, the platform spans operational risk, regulatory compliance, IT governance, internal audit, business continuity, model risk, third-party risk, policy, data privacy, and financial controls management, delivering a holistic view of risk and regulatory responsibilities across the enterprise.

The software was originally developed by American Computer Innovators (ACI), a company founded in Amherst, Massachusetts in May 1990. In 1996, ACI began developing an electronic publishing system for news publishers and media companies, which later evolved into an enterprise content management system. The company was significantly restructured during 2000-2001, and under new management, its offerings were marketed as Governance, Risk, and Compliance software and services sold to enterprise customers. In August 2000, the company was officially renamed OpenPages.

IBM's GRC journey began with the acquisition of OpenPages on October 21, 2010, for approximately $140 million. IBM evolved OpenPages from a powerful compliance tool into an AI-enabled GRC platform that supports modern enterprise risk management. IBM was among the first GRC providers to integrate AI into its platform beginning in 2016. In 2023, IBM introduced generative AI and large language models (LLM) capabilities to OpenPages, enabling clients to automate key GRC processes such as control mapping, evidence collection, and policy documentation.

Today, IBM OpenPages serves 287 companies, primarily large enterprises with over $1 billion in revenue and 10,000+ employees. The platform has been recognized as a Leader in the 2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Governance, Risk and Compliance Tools. IBM continues to innovate with OpenPages 9.1.1, released in July 2025, which features expanded AI capabilities, improved workflows, and enhanced integration with watsonx AI.
