Founded in 2022 by Walter Raftus and Timothy Seto, recent graduates from the University of Waterloo's engineering program, Forge Automation is revolutionizing on-demand manufacturing by combining advanced automation software with precision machining capabilities. The company addresses a critical challenge faced by hardware teams, engineers, and product developers: the need for fast, reliable access to custom metal parts without the typical weeks-long lead times and inconsistent quality of traditional machine shops.
The founding team brings exceptional technical pedigree to the venture. Timothy Seto, who serves as CEO, studied at the University of Waterloo and interned at Apple, Formlabs, and iRobot, accumulating over 10 years of machining experience building robots and machines. Walter Raftus, the CTO, studied AI and Mechatronics Engineering at Waterloo and interned at Nvidia, Trexo Robotics (a Y Combinator W19 company), and Intel PSG, working on diverse software projects ranging from system software to deep learning and embedded control. The co-founders graduated in summer 2022 and immediately launched Forge Automation, backed by Y Combinator.
Forge Automation's innovative business model offers two distinct service options. For on-demand needs, customers can order custom metal parts online through Forge's platform, which uses proprietary software called Foundry to automatically generate machine-ready toolpaths. Engineers can upload CAD models with manufacturing intent directly, bypassing the need for traditional technical drawings. For companies requiring dedicated capacity, Forge Reserve Machines provides guaranteed access to dedicated CNC mills on Forge's shop floor, complete with maintenance and skilled machinists, ensuring 4-day production SLAs. Over the past two years, Forge has shipped thousands of parts to engineers across North America, serving customers from Fortune 10 companies to early-stage startups, establishing itself as the easiest way to order precision machined parts online.
