Company Overview
FANUC Corporation is one of the world's largest manufacturers of industrial robots, CNC systems, and factory automation equipment. Headquartered at the base of Mt. Fuji in Oshino, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, the company was founded in 1972 as a spinoff from Fujitsu and has grown to become a global leader in automation technology.
Founded by Dr. Seiuemon Inaba, FANUC pioneered numerical control (NC) systems for machine tools before expanding into robotics and factory automation. By 1982, FANUC had captured half of the world CNC market, overcoming the dominance of American manufacturers. The company developed its first industrial robot in 1974, initially for use in its own factories, before beginning commercial production in 1977.
FANUC is organized into three main business units: Factory Automation (FA), Robot, and Robomachine. The company's distinctive yellow robots are found in factories worldwide, performing tasks from welding and painting to assembly and material handling. FANUC is known for its reliability, precision, and the extensive use of its own robots in manufacturing its products - a practice that demonstrates confidence in its technology.
For fiscal year 2024 (ending March 31, 2024), FANUC reported net sales of 797.13 billion yen, with the Robot segment generating 242.4 billion yen (approximately 30% of revenues). While robot sales declined 16.4% due to weaker demand in automobile-related industries, particularly in China, Europe, and the Americas, FANUC remains one of the top industrial robot manufacturers globally.
