Company Overview
Boston Dynamics is a pioneering American robotics company known for developing some of the world's most advanced and agile robots. Founded in 1992 as a spin-off from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) by Marc Raibert, the company is headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts and is now a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group.
The company's robots have become iconic through viral videos showcasing their remarkable mobility and capabilities. Boston Dynamics creates robots that navigate difficult terrain, perform complex maneuvers, and work alongside humans in industrial settings. Key products include Spot (a four-legged robotic dog), Atlas (a humanoid robot), and Stretch (a warehouse logistics robot).
Boston Dynamics has had a notable ownership history, having been acquired by Google X in 2013, then sold to SoftBank in 2017, before Hyundai Motor Group completed its acquisition in 2021 at a valuation of approximately $1.1 billion. Hyundai holds an 80% stake in the company.
In 2024, Boston Dynamics unveiled an all-electric version of its Atlas humanoid robot, retiring the hydraulic version, and announced partnerships with NVIDIA, Google DeepMind, Toyota Research Institute, and the Robotics & AI Institute. The company is positioning its robots for commercial applications in manufacturing, construction, and logistics while continuing to advance robotics research.
